SPAN 102 Hybrid

Course Description

SPA102 represents the equivalent of the second part of a first-year course delivered in a hybrid course format.   This course has a significant component of technologically based materials: Online workbook to accompany the Pura Vida textbook, the Spanish 102 Website in Blackboard with online readings, quizzes, tests, and compositions exams and for online meetings (Mondays or Wednesdays) a sound/text chat program (Zoom). The course materials and exercises focus on developing the same array of skills promoted in the regular SPA 102 (i.e., meeting 4 days face-to-face).  This course is particularly appropriate for the following student conditions: (1) a preference for learning mediated through technology (This is a hybrid course, so this indicates that you will be working most of the time with technology); (2) schedule/time limitations (since class meets only two days a week in the classroom and once a week online with your instructor and classmates); (3) responsible and independent students who do not need an instructor to remind them to do their work (e.g., exams, compositions, readings…).

About this Spanish 102 hybrid format course:

  1. The instructor meets with students Tuesdays and Thursdays in the classroom to work with the textbook PuraVida (grammar, vocabulary, culture), and to practice our speaking and listening skills (communicative activities, games, songs …). Strong emphasis will be placed on acquiring conversational and comprehension skills, using practical and interesting situational materials that will stress both language and culture.
  2. Once a week (Mondays or Wednesdays) students will chat online (sound and text) with the instructor and classmates. Your instructor will inform you about the assigned day and time you have to connect to our Spanish online meetings during the semester. You will be using Zoom for the online meetings.
  3.  In between class meetings, students will use the Pura Vida textbook + online workbook, and the online tasks to perform additional exercises and activities (e.g., exams and online assignments based on online readings). Students will also take their exams outside class time in the Testing Facility, located in room 60 in the basement of Carver Hall. You will need a college ID to take these.

Important Note:

This course is not open to native Spanish speakers. Students who have completed three or more years of high-school world language study may not enroll in or receive credit for 101-102 in those languages; credit may be obtained by passing the appropriate Exam for Credit or by completing an advanced sequence (200-level or higher) in that language.”

“Students who have completed two years but less than three years of a single high-school world language may enroll in either a 102 course in that language, or in the case of Spanish, Span 97. Before enrolling in either Span 97 or a 102 language course, students are recommended to take the on-line placement test available at http://language.iastate.edu/students.

Students requesting a waiver regarding eligibility for 101-102 must appeal in writing to the WLC Advisors Ruxandra Looft, 515-294-7570, or Ginger Nally, 515-294-8988.
