Bio

Eugenio Matibag, Professor of Spanish in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Iowa State University, was born in Cavite (Philippines) and grew up in Southern California, where he attended Redlands University and the University of California, Irvine. His broad research field is world literature in Spanish. He has published articles on Latin American, Caribbean and Philippine literature and culture in the journals Revista Hispánica Moderna, Humanities Diliman, Catauro, Postmodern Culture, The Journal of Caribbean Studies, Dispositio, Hispamérica, Kritika Kultura and Caribbean Quarterly; and in anthologies that include L’Héritage de Calibán, Migrant Identities of «Creole Cosmopolitans», Introduction to the Latino and Latina Religious Experience, and Sacred Possessions: Vodou, Santería, Obeah, and the Caribbean. His two books are Afro-Cuban Religious Experience (University Press of Florida, 1996) and Haitian-Dominican Counterpoint (Palgrave, 2003). He is currently at work on a monograph that examines the discourse of nationalism in nineteenth and twentieth-century Philippine literature. In 2006 he was featured as a guest on the television show “Only Gemma,” broadcast from Makati, Metro Manila and hosted by former Miss International and Miss Philippines Gemma Cruz Araneta. Nowadays, apart from reading, writing, teaching or traveling, Dr. Matibag likes riding his bicycle or playing his guitar.
